What is Hip Hop & Rap Music
Hip Hop Music is the type of music which has developed along with the whole hip hop culture in America. First appearing in the South Bronx NYC in the 1970’s it includes four stylistic elements – DJing (or “scratching”), rapping, sampling (or synthesis) and beatboxing. Rap music is often used as an alternative name for hip hop music, although the term hip hop refers to much more than the music, it refers to the whole subculture.
Rapping more particularly refers to the vocal style of talking in verse or rhyme instead of singing, there’s usually a synthesized beat and many rappers have been extremely successful over the last few years. Some raps are written and memorized but some of them involve lots of improvization, and are even performed a cappella.
Representative Hip Hop & Rap Musicians
Hip Hop music has its roots firmly within the African American community, and many music historians and fanatics regard DJ Kool Herc to be the father of the genre. The method of scratching, however, was invented by Grand Wizard Theodore who was the first to use the technique to produce a sound which could be rapped over. MC Hammer and Snoop Dogg enjoyed enormous success from their rapping, the The Beastie Boys were also extremely popular, proving that rappers didn’t have to be black. Eminem came onto the scene in 2000 with his album “The Marshall Mathers LP” becoming the fastest selling album of all time.
