What is Hard Bop Music

Hard Bop Music is a type of jazz which goes one (or more) steps further than bebop (or “bop”) music. The phrase was first coined by the record companies and journalists of the 1950’s, describing jazz which incorporated influences from gospel music, rhythm and blues, and blues and focused especially on the piano and saxophone. Hard bop was seen by some as a direct response to the West Coast Jazz and Cool Jazz of a similar era.

Representative Hard Bop Musicians

Hard Bop Musicians were thick and plentiful (I don’t mean thick thick, I mean there was lots of them), although many jazzy types see it as originating with The Jazz Messengers, a jazz quartet which was led by the pianist Horace Silver with Art Blakey on the drums.  Other Hard Boppers include Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard, Cannonball Adderley and Blue Mitchell.
