What is Pop Music

Pop Music is popular music, simple as that. It’s used to describe the majority of the commercial recorded music for the popular worldwide market. Of course, each country has their own version of what’s popular (have you ever tuned in to the Eurovision Song Contest?) Pop music is firmly and unashamedly aimed at the youth culture of the day, evolving with each generation (but that doesn’t mean that many of the most popular pop songs of today aren’t remakes of original recordings from 10, 20, 30 or even 40 years ago).

Representative Pop Musicians

Take your pick! I suppose we ought to start off with the Peter Pan of Pop . . . Cliff Richards, and the inimitable Pop Princess Kylie Minogue, after that there are millions to choose from. For many the real commercial pop culture began when producers like Stock Aitken Waterman started writing and producing songs in the mid 1980s with people like Banarama and Hazell Dean, Kylie Minogue (yes, she was one of theirs) and Rick Astley, all real pop icons of their day (and some of them are still going strong).

Okay, well we had to start with Sir Cliff didn’t we?

Who thought that girl bands were a new thing? Pussycat who???

I thought I ought to include something from the Eurovision Song Contest, just to give you some idea of what I’m talking about if you haven’t ever had the mis fortune to see it. What do you think?
